Pictory turns a blog post into a finished video in a few minutes. No editing timeline. No film crew. Two brothers and a third co-founder built it in 2019 and barely raised money — just a $2.1 million seed. By 2024 it was pulling in around $3.9 million in revenue with a team of about 57. While the rest of the AI video world chases billion-dollar valuations, Pictory just quietly built a tool people actually pay for.

Vikram and Vishal Chalana are brothers. In 2019 they teamed up with Abid Ali in Bothell, a quiet suburb north of Seattle.
The problem they picked was simple. Most people have words.
Almost nobody has video editing skills. So they built software that takes a script, a blog post, or a long recording and turns it into a watchable video.
It pulls in stock footage. It adds captions.
It generates a voiceover. The user never touches a timeline.
WHAT THEY ACTUALLY DO
It is a subscription tool. Creators, marketers, and online course makers pay a monthly fee to use it.
Pictory does the boring work for them. It finds relevant stock clips, adds auto-captions, and chops long videos into short ones.
Plans are tiered. The more videos you make, the more you pay.
That is basically it.
THE PRODUCTS
The core product is text-to-video. Paste a script and get a finished video back.
There is also blog-to-video, which converts an article into a clip. Video highlight tools turn a long recording into short shareable pieces.
And there is auto-captioning that adds subtitles in seconds. Everything runs in the browser.
HOW THEY GREW
Pictory leaned hard on affiliates and a free trial. It went after bloggers and course creators who needed video but hated editing software.
A lot of growth came from word of mouth inside creator communities. The team stayed small on purpose.
Around 57 people generated roughly $3.9 million in revenue in 2024. That is a lean operation by AI startup standards.
THE HARD PART
The AI video space got crowded fast. OpusClip, Captions, Synthesia, and a dozen others all chase the same creators.
Pictory raised only $2.1 million while some rivals raised tens of millions. Competing on features against better-funded teams is the daily grind.
Staying capital-efficient is a strength right up until a rival ships something you cannot match.

WHO BACKED THEM
Pictory raised a $2.1 million seed round in January 2022. FUSE led it and Voyager Capital joined in.
That is modest money for an AI company. The bet was on staying lean and profitable rather than raising big and burning fast.
So far the small-and-steady plan has held.

Companies
Descript
Descript edits video and audio by editing text. Pictory generates video from text. Both bet that creators want to skip the editing timeline entirely.
Synthesia
Another AI video company, but Synthesia builds avatar-led videos from text while Pictory stitches stock footage and captions. Same creator market, different angle.
