ServiceTitan built software for plumbers, HVAC techs, and electricians — the kind of people everyone assumed were too busy to use tech. Founders Ara Mahdessian and Vahe Kuzoyan built it because their fathers ran small home-services businesses and the tools available were terrible. That personal motivation turned into a company worth over $8 billion at IPO. ServiceTitan went public on NASDAQ in December 2024 under ticker TTAN. It is one of the most successful vertical SaaS companies ever built.

Ara Mahdessian and Vahe Kuzoyan were Stanford computer science graduates with a specific frustration: their fathers both ran home-services businesses — a plumbing company and an HVAC company — and the software they used was outdated, clunky, and incomplete. Scheduling was done on paper or in spreadsheets.
Invoicing was manual. Customer history was kept in notebooks.
They started ServiceTitan in 2012 to fix exactly that. The name came from the idea of turning blue-collar service workers into titans of their trades — giving them enterprise-grade tools at a price small businesses could afford.
The early product was built around the specific workflows of field service companies: dispatching technicians, managing job schedules, processing payments in the field, and following up with customers. Unlike generic CRM or accounting tools, everything was purpose-built for plumbers and HVAC companies.
Growth was slow at first. The target customer does not spend much time on LinkedIn or TechCrunch.
Sales came through industry trade shows, word of mouth among contractors, and direct outreach. By 2017, they had enough traction to raise serious institutional money.
WHAT THEY ACTUALLY DO
Subscription SaaS with per-technician pricing. Customers pay a monthly fee based on the number of technicians using the platform.
Additional revenue comes from payment processing (ServiceTitan Payments), marketing tools, and add-on modules for financing, reporting, and customer communications. Enterprise contracts with large multi-location service companies represent a growing segment.
THE PRODUCTS
ServiceTitan Platform: the core field service management system covering scheduling, dispatching, CRM, invoicing, and reporting. Used by over 100,000 contractors.
ServiceTitan Payments: integrated payment processing that lets technicians collect payment in the field via card, check, or financing. Generates meaningful transaction revenue.
ServiceTitan Marketing Pro: automated customer follow-up, review requests, and campaign tools for home service businesses.
ServiceTitan Financing: embedded financing tools that let customers offer buy-now-pay-later options for large jobs like HVAC replacements.
HOW THEY GREW
Vertical depth over horizontal breadth. ServiceTitan went deep in home services before expanding into adjacent trades: HVAC, plumbing, electrical, garage doors, pest control, and landscaping.
Each trade has slightly different workflows and regulations, so the company built trade-specific versions of the platform.
Channel partnerships with trade associations and franchise networks gave them access to thousands of potential customers at once. Franchisors who mandated ServiceTitan across their franchise networks brought in hundreds of accounts overnight.
The company has also invested heavily in education and community — building a conference called Pantheon that became one of the largest gatherings in the home services industry.
THE HARD PART
Selling to an audience that is deeply skeptical of software. Home service business owners are busy, cost-conscious, and burned by bad software promises before.
The sales cycle is long. Churn happens when technicians retire or owners sell their businesses.
Competing with cheaper alternatives — many of them legacy players or newer verticalized competitors — requires constant product investment.

Companies
Klaviyo
Both are vertical SaaS companies that became dominant in their specific niches by going deep rather than broad. Klaviyo owned e-commerce marketing; ServiceTitan owns home services management. Both IPO'd as category leaders.
Workstream
Both companies sell software to the trades and service economy — the historically under-digitized workforce. Workstream focuses on hiring; ServiceTitan focuses on operations. Both bet that blue-collar businesses are a massive untapped SaaS market.
