Temporal makes it possible to write software that never fails — or more precisely, that automatically recovers from any failure. In a world where every application depends on unreliable networks, crashing services, and temporary outages, Temporal provides a "durable execution" platform that ensures your code completes even when the world falls apart around it. Netflix, Stripe, Snap, and Datadog use it. If you have ever wondered why some apps gracefully handle errors while others crash, Temporal is often the answer.

temporal.ioTHE ORIGIN STORY
Maxim Fateev and Samar Abbas worked together at Uber, where they built Cadence — an internal platform for managing reliable, long-running workflows. Cadence became one of Uber's most critical internal systems, handling everything from trip processing to payment reconciliation.
When they left Uber, they open-sourced a new version as Temporal and founded a company around it. The core insight: most software failures happen because developers have to manually handle retries, timeouts, and error recovery.
Temporal handles all of that automatically.
WHAT THEY ACTUALLY DO
Open-source core with cloud hosting monetization. Temporal Server is free and open-source.
Temporal Cloud is the managed service, with pricing based on actions executed. Revenue comes from enterprises that want managed Temporal without operating the infrastructure themselves.
Enterprise support contracts provide additional revenue.
THE PRODUCTS
Temporal Server (open-source durable execution platform). Temporal Cloud (managed hosting).
Workflow-as-code (write workflows in Go, Java, Python, TypeScript,.NET). Automatic retries, timeouts, and error handling.
Long-running workflow support (workflows that run for weeks or months). Visibility and debugging tools.
HOW THEY GREW
Developer adoption through open source. Temporal grew by solving a real pain point for backend developers — building reliable, failure-proof applications is extremely hard.
The open-source project gained massive adoption (8,000+ GitHub stars, hundreds of companies). Temporal Cloud converts a percentage of users to paid managed hosting.
THE HARD PART
Explaining the product. "Durable execution" is an abstract concept that many developers do not immediately understand.
Temporal's biggest challenge is education — convincing developers they have a problem they did not know they had. Competition from AWS Step Functions, Apache Airflow, and other workflow orchestration tools.
