WRITESONIC

Netfigo Verdict
on Writesonic

Writesonic is the AI writing tool that barely needed the money it raised. Samanyou Garg started it as a college side project in 2020, got into Y Combinator in 2021, and raised $2.6 million. Then he mostly ignored the cash. The company was profitable from day one and grew to more than 10 million users without burning the round. While flashier rivals torched venture money, Writesonic quietly built a real business. It is now reinventing itself again, this time for the era of AI search.

THE ORIGIN STORY

Samanyou Garg built Writesonic in 2020 while basically still a student. He had been tinkering with AI and saw that writing marketing copy was a perfect job for a language model.

In March 2021, with one day left before the deadline, he threw together a Y Combinator application. He got in, joining the Summer 2021 batch.

From there Writesonic grew fast, helped by the explosion of interest in AI writing. The unusual part is that Garg ran it like a bootstrapper even after raising money.

WHAT THEY ACTUALLY DO

Writesonic helps businesses and marketers pump out content. You tell it what you need, a blog post, an ad, a product description, or an SEO page, and it writes a draft in seconds.

Customers pay a monthly subscription based on how much they generate. The whole point is speed and volume.

A small marketing team can produce the content of a much bigger one. That simple promise got it past 10 million users.

THE PRODUCTS

The core Writesonic app generates marketing content, from blog posts to ad copy to SEO pages. Chatsonic is its conversational AI assistant, pitched as a ChatGPT alternative that can pull in current information.

Photosonic generates images. Botsonic lets businesses build their own AI chatbots.

Lately the headline product is its AI search growth engine, which tracks how often a brand appears in AI-generated answers and helps push that number up.

HOW THEY GREW

Two things drove Writesonic. First, discipline.

Garg has said the company was profitable from the start and never touched most of the money it raised, so it could survive when the AI hype cooled. Second, it kept shipping new products around the core, like Chatsonic, a ChatGPT-style assistant that could pull in fresh information from the web.

More recently it pivoted hard toward AI search, building tools to track and boost how brands show up inside AI answers. It keeps moving to wherever the attention is going.

THE HARD PART

AI writing got commoditized fast. The second ChatGPT arrived, anyone could generate a blog post for free.

Dozens of tools, including Writesonic, suddenly looked replaceable. The old game of selling AI words by the month got much harder.

That is why Writesonic keeps reinventing itself, most recently around AI search visibility. The challenge never really ends.

The underlying technology it sells keeps getting cheaper and more available to everyone.

WHO BACKED THEM

Writesonic raised about $2.6 million in seed funding in September 2021, led by HOF Capital. Y Combinator backed it as part of the Summer 2021 batch, and Amino Capital and Soma Capital joined too.

Here is the twist that makes the round interesting. Garg has said the company was profitable from day one and barely spent the money.

So the funding worked more like insurance than fuel. It gave Writesonic the safety of a funded startup with the discipline of a bootstrapped one.
