ALEXANDER PACK
Co-founding the crypto funds Dragonfly and Hack VC, and betting early on where crypto and AI collide.
Pack got into crypto around 2014, back when most VCs thought it was a scam or a joke. Then he did the hard thing twice. He co-founded Dragonfly in 2018 and grew it into a multi-billion-dollar fund, then left to start Hack VC. His favorite moment is investing before a company even has a product. Now he is pouring money into the collision of crypto and AI while it still sounds like science fiction. Early, weird, and usually first.

CAREER & BACKGROUND
Pack got into crypto early, around 2014, when it was still a fringe curiosity. He did a stint at AngelList, then joined Bain Capital Ventures around 2016 to help launch its crypto practice.
In 2018 he went bigger. He co-founded Dragonfly, a crypto fund with a foot in both the US and Asia, alongside Bo Feng.
It grew into a multi-billion-dollar operation. Then he did it again.
Around 2021 he co-founded Hack VC and now runs it as managing partner. His whole career is basically the same move on repeat.
Spot a new technology before it is obvious. Fund the founders building it.
COMPANIES & ROLES
Hack VC is his main gig now. It is a seed-stage fund that announced a roughly $200 million crypto fund in early 2022, with backers reportedly including Sequoia, Fidelity, and a16z.
Before that came Dragonfly, the crypto fund he co-founded in 2018 that spanned the US and China. He also co-founded Imperii Partners, a crypto-native investment bank.
Earlier stops include Bain Capital Ventures, where he helped start the crypto practice, and AngelList. The through line is crypto, always at the earliest stage.
INVESTING STYLE & PHILOSOPHY
Pack is an incubator at heart. He likes to show up before there is a product, a business plan, or sometimes even a company.
Just a smart founder and a new idea. Lately he has leaned hard into the overlap between crypto and AI.
Think decentralized computing power and AI tools built on blockchains. His bet is that the two biggest tech waves of the decade smash together, and he wants to own the collision.
In plain English, he funds moonshots that most people think are far too early.
THE PLAYBOOK
Risk Approach
Seed-stage crypto is about as risky as investing gets. Most of these companies go to zero.
Pack knows that and does it on purpose. His model is simple.
Make a lot of very early bets. Expect most to fail.
Count on a few to pay for everything. He also believes the best time to build is when everyone else is scared.
He has said bear markets are when the real technology actually gets made. So he leans in when the crowd runs for the door.
Money Habits
Pack keeps his personal life almost entirely off the internet, which is its own kind of habit in an industry full of loud founders. What we do know is how he moves money professionally.
He writes a lot of small early checks instead of a few giant ones. He puts firm money to work hardest during downturns, when prices are low and the hype has drained out.
And he spends his reputation as freely as his cash, incubating companies and sitting next to founders from day one.
BIGGEST WIN
His biggest win is really about timing. Pack started investing in crypto around 2014, years before most VCs would touch it.
Then he co-founded Dragonfly in 2018 and helped grow it into a multi-billion-dollar fund. Getting in that early, and building not one but two crypto funds that serious people handed money to, is the win.
In a field where most funds showed up late and overpaid, he was already there.
BIGGEST MISTAKE
The closest thing to a public regret is FTX. Pack has admitted he admired Sam Bankman-Fried and thought he was one of the smartest people he had ever met.
Then FTX collapsed in late 2022 and turned out to be a giant fraud. Pack later called the whole thing terrible at the time but a blessing in disguise, since it cleared a lot of bad actors out of crypto.
Being wrong about SBF put him in crowded company. Almost everyone smart in the room got fooled too.
Still, it is a reminder that charisma is not diligence.
FINANCIAL PHILOSOPHY
Pack's core belief is that you make the most money by being early and being right when it is uncomfortable. Fund the technology when the market hates it.
Back the founder before anyone else believes. He is also convinced the next decade belongs to the collision of crypto and AI, so he points his money there while it still sounds crazy.
Boiled down, his rule is to buy conviction, not consensus. If everyone already agrees, the easy money is long gone.
FAMILY & PERSONAL LIFE
Pack keeps his personal and family life out of public view. Unlike a lot of crypto investors, he is not building a personal brand on social media or posting his morning routine.
What is on the record is almost entirely professional. That kind of privacy is genuinely rare in this industry.
EDUCATION
Pack went to Wesleyan University, where he graduated with high honors from its College of Social Studies. That is a demanding program mixing philosophy, politics, economics, and history.
Before that he attended the Hopkins School in Connecticut. Here is the interesting part.
He did not come up through a finance or computer science pipeline. He is a liberal arts guy who ended up funding some of the most technical companies in crypto.
BOOKS & RESOURCES
Pack has not written a book
His real output is the stream of investment theses Hack VC publishes, especially on where crypto and AI meet. If you want to understand how he thinks, those essays are the place to start. For the foundational reading in his world, it is still the original Bitcoin whitepaper and the Ethereum whitepaper. Not books, but the two documents that created the industry he bets on. His long-form interviews, like the one he did with ChainCatcher, are another good window into his incubator-first style
QUOTES (5)
Bear markets are the best time to build excellent technology. In many ways the pace of infrastructure development is faster than ever.
The breakthroughs in model quality sparked a new wave of generative AI, and that will have an incredible impact on cryptocurrency.
For me, the thing I love most in this world is finding a great founder with a new idea and investing from the very beginning, often before a product or business plan even exists.
It was terrible at the time, but in hindsight it turned out to be a blessing in disguise.
