BOBBY MURPHY

Co-founded Snapchat — built the disappearing messages app that terrified Facebook

Netfigo Verdict
on Bobby Murphy

The invisible billionaire. Bobby Murphy co-founded Snapchat with Evan Spiegel and turned disappearing photos into a $20 billion company. While Spiegel does the interviews and the magazine covers, Murphy builds the actual product. He wrote the original code. He runs the engineering. He's worth $4.5 billion and most people couldn't pick him out of a lineup. The perfect CTO origin story.

CAREER & BACKGROUND

Born in 1988 in Berkeley, California. His mother is Filipina, his father is Irish-American.

Grew up in a comfortable Bay Area family. Went to Stanford, where he studied mathematical and computational science.

At Stanford, he lived in the same fraternity house as Evan Spiegel and Reggie Brown. In 2011, the three developed an app called Picaboo — photos that disappeared after being viewed.

Brown was eventually pushed out (and later sued), while Murphy and Spiegel renamed the app Snapchat.

Murphy was the technical co-founder. He wrote the original code while Spiegel handled product vision and business.

The app went viral among college students. By 2013, Snapchat was turning down a $3 billion acquisition offer from Facebook.

By 2014, it had over 100 million daily users.

Snap Inc. went public in March 2017 at a $24 billion valuation — the biggest tech IPO since Facebook at the time.

Murphy's role expanded into overseeing Snap's technology platform, including the Spectacles hardware and Snap's AR (augmented reality) push. As CTO, he's driven Snap's bet that AR will be the next major computing platform.

COMPANIES & ROLES

Snap Inc. is the whole story.

Murphy is co-founder and CTO. He oversees all the technology — the app, the AR platform, Spectacles, and the advertising tech stack.

Before Snap, he briefly interned at Revel Systems. But Murphy has been a one-company founder since college.

He doesn't have a portfolio of companies or angel investments. He builds one thing.

INVESTING STYLE & PHILOSOPHY

Murphy is an engineer, not an investor. He doesn't talk about markets or portfolios.

His approach to wealth is to keep building the thing he's building. His equity in Snap is his investment.

He's the rare tech billionaire who hasn't diversified into a hundred angel deals and real estate plays. One company, one bet, all-in.

THE PLAYBOOK

Risk Approach

Extremely high risk concentration. Murphy's entire net worth is essentially Snap stock.

When the stock dropped from $83 to $7 between 2021 and 2022, he lost over $10 billion on paper. He didn't sell.

He didn't diversify. He kept building.

That's either incredible conviction or incredible stubbornness.

Money Habits

Murphy is famously private. He doesn't do interviews.

He doesn't post on social media (ironic for a social media co-founder). He lives in the Venice Beach area of Los Angeles, near Snap's headquarters.

He reportedly drives a modest car and lives well below what his net worth would suggest. No yachts, no art collections, no tabloid appearances.

BIGGEST WIN

Turning down Facebook's $3 billion acquisition offer in 2013. At the time, everyone thought Spiegel and Murphy were insane.

Snapchat had no revenue. Facebook had unlimited resources.

But they bet on independence, and Snap went public in 2017 at $24 billion — 8x what Zuckerberg offered. At peak, Snap was worth over $130 billion.

That "no" is one of the best decisions in tech history.

BIGGEST MISTAKE

The 2022 stock collapse. Snap shares dropped over 90% from their September 2021 peak of $83 to under $8 by December 2022.

Apple's iOS privacy changes gutted Snap's advertising business, and the company had to lay off 20% of its workforce. Murphy's personal net worth went from over $14 billion to under $3 billion.

The stock has partially recovered, but it was a brutal stretch.

FINANCIAL PHILOSOPHY

Build something people love, and the money follows. Murphy doesn't give speeches about investing philosophy.

He writes code. His philosophy is essentially the engineering version of product-market fit: make the technology work so well that users can't imagine life without it.

He believes AR will be as transformative as mobile, and he's betting Snap's future on it.

FAMILY & PERSONAL LIFE

Very private. He's reportedly in a relationship but keeps personal details completely out of the press.

His mother is Filipino and his father is of Irish descent. He's close with Evan Spiegel and they've maintained their partnership since Stanford.

EDUCATION

Stanford University. Studied mathematical and computational science.

Met Evan Spiegel and Reggie Brown at the Kappa Sigma fraternity. Built the first version of Snapchat during his college years.
