GARY PLAYER

Gary Player is arguably the greatest international golfer in history. Born in Johannesburg in 1935, he became the first non-American golfer to win the Grand Slam (all four major championships), doing it across three different decades — an achievement that still has not been matched.

He won 9 major championships in total: 3 Masters, 3 British Opens, 2 PGA Championships, and 1 US Open. He played on the PGA Tour for five decades and won events in his 50s.

He was ranked #1 in the world. He helped break South African golf open to international competition during the apartheid era while facing serious personal and political backlash.

After his playing career, he built Gary Player Group into one of the premier golf course design and real estate businesses in the world, designing over 400 courses in 40 countries. At 88 he still swings a club, still promotes his health and fitness philosophy, and still runs his company.

Player built a business empire on the back of a global brand that was built during his playing career — before that was a common thing. He focused on golf course design and real estate, which is an adjacent business for a legendary golfer, and scaled it globally.

The "Black Knight" brand he built carries enormous prestige in golf-adjacent real estate development, particularly in premium markets. He is methodical about partnerships and extremely selective about course projects.

Gary Player Group has designed and developed some of the most prestigious golf courses and resort communities in the world, including properties in South Africa, Asia, and the Middle East. The business generates consistent revenue and has operated for over 40 years — rare longevity in athlete-founded companies.

He has spoken about early career financial struggles, including being underpaid for years by US golf standards because of his South African status, and some business ventures in South Africa that suffered due to the apartheid-era international sanctions against South African commerce.

Player has been obsessed with physical fitness since the 1950s — when fitness was not part of golf culture at all. He applied the same discipline to his businesses: long time horizons, consistent effort, no shortcuts.
