GAVIN WOOD
Co-founded Ethereum and wrote its technical specification. Then built Polkadot, the blockchain that connects other blockchains.
Gavin Wood wrote the Yellow Paper — the technical specification that turned Vitalik Buterin's Ethereum vision into actual working code. He built the first functional Ethereum client (written in C++). He invented Solidity, the programming language that every Ethereum smart contract is written in. Then he left Ethereum and built Polkadot, a blockchain designed to connect all other blockchains together. If Vitalik is the philosopher, Gavin Wood is the engineer who actually builds the thing. Every smart contract on Ethereum runs on code he designed.

CAREER & BACKGROUND
Gavin James Wood was born in Lancaster, England in 1980. He studied computer science at the University of York, earning a PhD focused on music visualization software.
He got interested in crypto and blockchain in 2013 and connected with Vitalik Buterin. He became one of the eight co-founders of Ethereum and wrote the Ethereum Yellow Paper — the formal technical specification that defined exactly how the Ethereum Virtual Machine works.
He also created Solidity, the programming language used to write smart contracts on Ethereum. He was Ethereum's first CTO and built the first working Ethereum client (cpp-ethereum).
He left the Ethereum Foundation in 2016 and co-founded Parity Technologies, which built the most widely used Ethereum client (Parity/OpenEthereum). In 2016, he published the Polkadot whitepaper, describing a "multi-chain" network that would allow different blockchains to communicate.
Web3 Foundation was created to fund Polkadot's development. Polkadot launched in 2020, and DOT reached a peak market cap of over $50 billion in November 2021.
COMPANIES & ROLES
Parity Technologies (now part of the Polkadot ecosystem) — the company that built Polkadot, Substrate (a blockchain development framework), and previously the Parity Ethereum client. Web3 Foundation — the nonprofit behind Polkadot.
He also coined the term "Web3" in 2014 — the concept that the internet's next evolution would be decentralized and blockchain-based. Polkadot is the main blockchain network, with DOT as its native token.
Substrate, the framework Parity built, allows anyone to create custom blockchains that connect to Polkadot.
INVESTING STYLE & PHILOSOPHY
Wood is a technical purist. He doesn't invest based on market sentiment or financial models.
He builds infrastructure he believes is technically superior and bets that the market will eventually recognize it. His approach is: solve the hardest technical problems first, then let adoption follow.
He designed Polkadot to solve a specific problem (blockchain interoperability) that he believed was the biggest bottleneck for the entire crypto ecosystem. He has no interest in marketing hype or token price speculation.
THE PLAYBOOK
Risk Approach
Wood takes high technical and career risk but is meticulous about engineering risk. He left Ethereum — one of the most valuable crypto projects in history — because he disagreed with its technical direction.
He spent years building Polkadot from scratch when he could have stayed in the Ethereum ecosystem and been much wealthier. But within his projects, he is obsessively rigorous.
Parity's code is written in Rust (a memory-safe language). Polkadot uses formal verification techniques.
He designed Substrate to be modular and upgradeable without hard forks. His risk management is architectural.
Money Habits
Wood lives in Zug, Switzerland ("Crypto Valley") and Berlin. He is intensely private.
He rarely does media interviews. He communicates primarily through technical papers, blog posts, and occasional conference talks.
He is not on social media in any significant way. He is described by colleagues as brilliant, exacting, and somewhat difficult to work with because of his high standards.
He is not known for luxury spending. His wealth is primarily in DOT tokens and Parity equity.
BIGGEST WIN
Ethereum. Even though he left, Wood's contributions were foundational.
The Yellow Paper, Solidity, and the first working client — without these, Ethereum doesn't exist as we know it. Ethereum's peak market cap exceeded $500 billion.
Polkadot also hit a $50+ billion market cap and pioneered the parachain model (blockchains leasing slots on the relay chain), which influenced how many subsequent multi-chain architectures were designed. He also coined "Web3," which became the defining term for an entire industry.
BIGGEST MISTAKE
The Parity wallet hack. In November 2017, a vulnerability in Parity's multi-signature wallet code was triggered (accidentally, by a new developer), permanently freezing approximately $280 million worth of Ethereum.
The funds were never recovered. While Wood wasn't directly responsible for the specific code, it happened in his company's product.
It was one of the largest losses in crypto history and raised serious questions about smart contract security. Polkadot's subsequent market performance has also been disappointing relative to competitors like Solana.
FINANCIAL PHILOSOPHY
Wood believes the internet needs to be rebuilt on decentralized infrastructure. He believes blockchain's biggest problem is fragmentation — hundreds of chains that can't talk to each other — and that interoperability is the key to mass adoption.
He believes in building from first principles, using the most rigorous tools available (formal methods, Rust, modular design). He coined the term "Web3" because he believes the web should evolve from platforms that own your data to protocols where you own your data.
FAMILY & PERSONAL LIFE
Wood is very private about his personal life. He was born and raised in England.
He holds a PhD from the University of York. He has spent time living in Berlin, London, and Zug.
He does not discuss relationships or family publicly. His public persona is almost entirely defined by his technical work.
EDUCATION
University of York (B.S. and Ph.D., Computer Science).
His doctoral research was on music visualization, not blockchain — he pivoted entirely into crypto after encountering Bitcoin and Ethereum in 2013.

QUOTES (5)
I build with Rust because I don't trust software that doesn't protect against its own bugs.
I coined the term Web3 because I believe the next internet should be decentralized. Users should own their data.
I wrote the Yellow Paper because Vitalik had the vision but someone needed to write the spec.
Blockchains that can't talk to each other are like computers that can't connect to the internet.
The engineer who builds the bridge matters more than the architect who draws it.
