KANYE WEST

Built a $1.5 billion sneaker empire with Yeezy, then lost most of it after a series of antisemitic remarks destroyed every major brand partnership.

Netfigo Verdict
on Kanye West

Kanye West turned a music career into a $1.5 billion fashion empire with Yeezy Adidas, making him one of the richest musicians alive. Then he said some things on Twitter, went on a podcast tour that made advertisers run screaming, and Adidas terminated the partnership — wiping $1.5 billion off his net worth in a single press release. The fastest self-destruction of a brand in business history, executed by the man who built it.

CAREER & BACKGROUND

Born in Atlanta in 1977, raised on the South Side of Chicago by his mother, Donda West, an English professor. Started as a beat producer for Jay-Z's Roc-A-Fella Records in the early 2000s.

Everyone told him he was a producer, not a rapper. He dropped The College Dropout in 2004 anyway and became one of the best-selling musicians in history with 24 Grammy Awards.

But the business story is Yeezy. West launched the Air Yeezy with Nike in 2009, then left for Adidas in 2013 after Nike refused to pay royalties.

The Adidas deal was groundbreaking — West received a 15% royalty on all Yeezy sales. For context, Michael Jordan's Nike deal started at 5%.

West tripled that.

By 2021, Yeezy was doing $1.7 billion in annual revenue and accounted for nearly 8% of Adidas's total sales. In October 2022, Adidas terminated the partnership after West made a series of antisemitic statements on social media and in interviews.

Overnight, Forbes dropped his net worth estimate from $2 billion to $400 million. Every corporate partner — Gap, Balenciaga, his talent agency, his bank — cut ties.

COMPANIES & ROLES

Yeezy (fashion and sneaker brand, now independent after Adidas termination). GOOD Music (record label).

DONDA (creative agency). Previously had deals with Nike (Air Yeezy), Adidas (Yeezy Boost), Gap (Yeezy Gap), and Balenciaga.

All major corporate partnerships have been terminated. Now sells Yeezy products directly through his own website.

INVESTING STYLE & PHILOSOPHY

West is not a traditional investor — he is a brand builder who leveraged cultural influence into business deals. His "investment" was always in himself and his brand.

He negotiated equity and royalty deals rather than taking flat fees, which is smarter than what 99% of celebrity endorsers do. The Adidas royalty structure was essentially an ownership stake in future revenue.

THE PLAYBOOK

Risk Approach

Infinite, for better and worse. He went $53 million into personal debt in 2016 to fund his fashion ambitions.

He publicly asked Mark Zuckerberg for $1 billion on Twitter. He bet everything on his creative vision — and it worked spectacularly until he bet everything on saying whatever he wanted with zero filter.

Money Habits

Famously extravagant. Bought a $57 million Malibu mansion designed by Tadao Ando, then stripped it down to bare concrete.

Once tweeted that his personal debt was $53 million and asked fans for money. Reportedly spent millions on his 2020 presidential campaign, where he received 70,000 votes.

Still lives large despite the wealth destruction.

BIGGEST WIN

The Adidas Yeezy deal. A 15% royalty on a brand doing $1.7 billion in annual revenue.

No celebrity in sneaker history had ever negotiated anything close. The Yeezy Boost 350 became the most culturally relevant sneaker of the 2010s and completely redefined what a musician could earn from fashion.

BIGGEST MISTAKE

The 2022 antisemitic statements that cost him the Adidas partnership, the Gap deal, the Balenciaga collaboration, his talent agency, his bank accounts, and approximately $1.5 billion in net worth. No individual in modern business history has ever destroyed this much personal wealth this quickly through self-inflicted damage.

FINANCIAL PHILOSOPHY

Create at all costs. West has always believed that creative vision is the ultimate asset and that money follows greatness.

He is not wrong — the Yeezy brand proved a single person's vision can generate $1.7 billion in annual sales. The problem is the same "no filter" approach that made his music and fashion groundbreaking also destroyed his biggest partnerships.

FAMILY & PERSONAL LIFE

Was married to Kim Kardashian from 2014 to 2022. Four children: North, Saint, Chicago, and Psalm.

Currently married to Bianca Censori, a Yeezy architect. His mother, Donda West, was an English professor at Chicago State University who died in 2007 during cosmetic surgery complications — her death profoundly affected him and is referenced throughout his work.

EDUCATION

Attended Chicago State University and the American Academy of Art briefly but dropped out to pursue music. Never completed a college degree.

Has said he is "a proud non-reader of books" — which makes the books section here a creative challenge.

QUOTES (5)

I am not a businessman. I am a business, man.

The world is full of yes-men. I would rather be honest and alone than comfortable and surrounded by people who agree with everything I say.

People always say, you can't. That's exactly why I do.

I went $53 million into debt to follow my dreams. You have to be willing to lose everything to gain everything.

If Nike won't give me royalties, I'll find someone who will. And I did.
