MATT HUANG

Co-founder of Paradigm, the crypto investment firm managing over $12 billion, and one of the first big-name VCs to go all-in on crypto.

Netfigo Verdict
on Matt Huang

Matt Huang left a cushy partner seat at Sequoia to bet his whole career on crypto, back when serious people still called it magic internet money. In 2018 he co-founded Paradigm with Coinbase's Fred Ehrsam. Six years later it managed over $12 billion. He also made one of the ugliest bets in venture history, pouring $278 million into FTX and writing every dollar down to zero. So he is both a genius and a cautionary tale, sometimes inside the same fund. That is crypto investing in one person.

CAREER & BACKGROUND

Huang was a math kid who studied mathematics at MIT and graduated in 2010. While still a student he started a company called Hotspots that predicted trends from social media.

Twitter bought it. From 2014 to 2018 he was a partner at Sequoia Capital, one of the most respected venture firms alive, where he led its early crypto bets.

Then he did the risky thing. He quit to start Paradigm in 2018 with Fred Ehrsam, a co-founder of Coinbase.

The firm went from about $400 million to over $12 billion in assets in six years. Along the way he joined the boards of Stripe and prediction market Kalshi.

COMPANIES & ROLES

Paradigm is the whole show. It is a crypto investment firm that acts more like a research lab than a normal fund, with engineers who help invent the tech they invest in.

Paradigm was an early, huge backer of Coinbase, the crypto exchange that went public in 2021. It helped fund Uniswap, the trading protocol, and its team even helped design parts of it.

It backed a long list of crypto projects, some of which soared and some of which vanished. Huang also sits on the board of Stripe, the payments giant, and helped start Tempo, a new payments network Paradigm built with Stripe.

INVESTING STYLE & PHILOSOPHY

Huang's style is concentration and conviction. He does not spread thin bets across a hundred things.

He makes big, early bets on a few ideas he thinks will define the next decade, then holds through the chaos. He looks for founders more than markets.

He once flew to Beijing, met a founder named Zhang Yiming working out of a dusty apartment, could not even understand the pitch, and still decided to back him. That founder built ByteDance, the company behind TikTok.

Huang bets on people who seem a little crazy in the best way.

THE PLAYBOOK

Risk Approach

Huang has an unusual relationship with risk. He is comfortable making moves most people would call reckless, like leaving Sequoia to go all-in on crypto.

But he claims down markets do not rattle him. His line is that down years are actually easier than up years, because when prices crash the noise clears and you can finally see what matters.

He invests through cycles, not quarters. The flip side is that concentration cuts both ways.

When he is wrong, like with FTX, he is spectacularly wrong.

Money Habits

Huang keeps his personal life almost entirely private, which for a crypto billionaire is refreshing. He is not posting supercars.

He is a self-described skeptic of authority who left the safest job in venture to build something new. Most of his energy goes into Paradigm, which he runs less like a fund and more like a team of researchers.

He once joked that running it feels like managing the X-Men Academy, a school full of unusually talented misfits. His wealth is tied up in Paradigm's funds and the crypto bets inside them, not in a flashy lifestyle.

BIGGEST WIN

Coinbase and the early crypto bets. Paradigm went all-in on crypto in 2018, when most respected investors thought it was a joke.

It backed Coinbase before the 2021 IPO that valued the exchange around $86 billion at its debut. It funded Uniswap and helped design it.

Paradigm's first flagship fund reportedly grew from about $760 million to $8.3 billion by the end of 2024. Huang saw a whole asset class before Wall Street did, and got paid enormously for being early and right.

BIGGEST MISTAKE

FTX. There is no soft way to say it.

Paradigm invested about $278 million in Sam Bankman-Fried's crypto exchange, at one point its second-largest position. In November 2022, FTX collapsed into what looked like massive fraud, and Paradigm wrote the entire investment down to zero.

Huang said the firm was shocked and deeply regretted the bet. He later admitted Bankman-Fried had resisted giving investors board seats, and Paradigm went along anyway.

The lesson he took public was brutal and simple. Trust matters, governance matters, and no return is worth backing someone you cannot actually hold accountable.

FINANCIAL PHILOSOPHY

Huang's core belief is that a few enormous ideas matter more than a hundred small ones. Find the technology that reorders the world, back it early, and hold on.

He is drawn to things that feel like beautiful ideas, which is literally how he described Bitcoin, before they make obvious business sense. He also distrusts authority and consensus, part of why he left Sequoia.

And he warns against chasing rivals. In his words, when you focus too much on competitors, you become more like them.

Better to build your own strange thing.

FAMILY & PERSONAL LIFE

Huang keeps his personal life almost entirely private, and there is little on the public record about his family. What is known is that he is a Chinese American investor, recognized by Gold House, a group that celebrates Asian and Pacific Islander leaders.

He came up the classic way, a bright kid who loved math and then found Silicon Valley. For someone who moves billions in crypto, the lack of drama and social-media flexing is its own kind of statement.

He lets Paradigm be the public face, not himself.

EDUCATION

Huang studied mathematics at MIT and graduated in 2010. The math brain shows up everywhere in how he invests, in his comfort with probability, weird bets, and long odds.

He also caught the startup bug early. While still at MIT he built a trend-prediction company that Twitter later bought, which taught him the founder's side of the table before he ever became an investor.

BOOKS & RESOURCES

Huang is not an author, but his thinking runs on a few books worth knowing.

The Sovereign Individual by James Dale Davidson and William Rees-Mogg

The cult favorite in crypto circles, a 1997 book predicting digital money would loosen the grip of governments, which is basically Paradigm's thesis

The Bitcoin Standard by Saifedean Ammous

Makes the hard case for why a fixed-supply digital money matters, the beautiful idea Huang saw in Bitcoin early

Thinking in Bets by Annie Duke

From a poker champion, is the clearest guide to making decisions under uncertainty, which is the whole job when you invest in things that might be worth zero. Together they explain how a math kid ends up betting billions on internet money

I think I've always had a certain skepticism towards authority, so when I see authority at work, I do question: Is this the way we want the world to operate?

When Fred and I started Paradigm five years ago, there was no master plan. What we had was a shared curiosity for the future, deep conviction in crypto, and a desire to advance the frontier of what's possible.
