DENISE COATES

Founder and co-CEO of Bet365, UK's highest-paid executive, built an £8 billion gambling empire from Stoke-on-Trent

Netfigo Verdict
on Denise Coates

Denise Coates borrowed £15 million against her family's betting shops in 2000 and built one of the world's most profitable gambling businesses from a Portakabin in Stoke-on-Trent. Bet365 now serves over 80 million customers across 90 countries and generates more than £3.5 billion in annual revenue. She regularly takes home £200 to £500 million a year in salary and dividends — more than the CEOs of BP, HSBC, and Barclays combined. She has never listed the company, never sold a stake, and still works out of the same city she grew up in.

CAREER & BACKGROUND

Denise grew up in a family that ran betting shops across Staffordshire. She studied mathematics and econometrics at the University of Sheffield and returned home to work in the family business.

In 2000, she spotted that online gambling was about to explode and convinced her father to let her use the betting shops as collateral for a £15 million bank loan. She launched Bet365.com in 2001, coding early versions of the platform herself and building the pricing models from scratch using her maths background.

By 2005, the online operation was profitable enough to buy out the family's retail betting shop chain entirely. Bet365 now employs over 4,500 people, most of them in Stoke-on-Trent.

Denise has been named the UK's highest-paid CEO every year from 2012 to 2023, taking between £220 million and £481 million annually depending on the business performance. She has donated over £40 million to local charities, hospitals, and community projects in Stoke.

She has never given a television interview.

COMPANIES & ROLES

Bet365 is the whole story. Denise and her brother John own approximately 50% of the business, with the wider Coates family holding the rest.

The company is private, unlisted, and entirely family-controlled. Bet365 operates in sports betting, casino, poker, and bingo across Europe, Asia, and the Americas.

Their in-play betting product, launched in 2002, was a product innovation that competitors spent years trying to copy. Denise also controls Stoke City Football Club through the family's ownership — her father Peter Coates is chairman.

INVESTING STYLE & PHILOSOPHY

Builder and controller. Denise has never shown interest in outside acquisitions or financial market investing.

Every pound she earns from Bet365 either goes back into the business, into Stoke-on-Trent, or into her own pocket — and the order matters. She is not a portfolio investor.

She is a founder who never left.

THE PLAYBOOK

Risk Approach

Extreme. She staked her family's entire physical betting shop estate — their livelihood — as collateral for the loan that started Bet365.

That is not measured risk management. That is conviction so strong it looks like recklessness until it works.

Once the business was established, she became one of the most conservative operators in the industry: no public listing, no outside capital, full control.

Money Habits

Pays herself extraordinarily well — her compensation regularly exceeds every FTSE 100 CEO combined. But she still lives in Stoke-on-Trent, which has one of the highest deprivation rates in England.

She has donated millions to local hospitals and the Dougie Mac hospice. The gap between what she earns and how she lives is one of the more interesting wealth stories in Britain.

BIGGEST WIN

Launching Bet365 online in 2001 and betting that in-play sports betting would be the killer product. She was right.

In-play is now the dominant betting format globally, and Bet365's early mover advantage in the product turned a regional family business into a global powerhouse. The timing was almost perfectly right.

BIGGEST MISTAKE

Moving too slowly on responsible gambling. Bet365 has paid millions in regulatory fines to the UK Gambling Commission for failures around player protection and vulnerable customer identification.

For a company of its scale and profitability, the investment in responsible gambling tools came later than it should have.

FINANCIAL PHILOSOPHY

Own it completely. Denise has maintained majority family control of Bet365 since day one, never diluting through a public offering or private equity stake.

Control is the philosophy. If you own the whole thing, you keep all the upside and answer to no one.

She has proved that thesis with roughly £8 billion in personal net worth.

FAMILY & PERSONAL LIFE

Her brother John Coates is co-CEO of Bet365. Their father Peter Coates is a former chairman of Bet365 and current chairman of Stoke City FC.

The family owns the business collectively. Denise is reportedly married and has children, though she has never discussed her personal life publicly.

EDUCATION

Mathematics and econometrics at the University of Sheffield. She built the early Bet365 pricing models herself using her quantitative background.

Her degree was not a stepping stone — it was the actual technical foundation of the business she built.

The mathematics of gambling are simple. The mathematics of building a sustainable business around gambling are considerably harder.

I borrowed the money, I built the platform, I wrote the odds. It was not a team effort in the beginning. It was just work.
