GIANLUIGI APONTE
Founded MSC, the world's largest container shipping company and second-largest cruise line, from a single cargo ship.
Gianluigi Aponte bought one small cargo ship in 1970 and turned it into MSC, the world's largest container shipping line with over 800 vessels. He also built the world's second-largest cruise company. During the pandemic shipping boom, MSC's profits reportedly exceeded $60 billion in a single year. That is not a typo. Sixty billion dollars. In profit. In one year. From a company run by a man most people have never heard of. The most profitable private company in the world is a shipping line founded by a guy from Sorrento.

CAREER & BACKGROUND
Gianluigi Aponte was born in 1940 in Sant'Agnello, near Sorrento, Italy. He grew up in a seafaring region where merchant shipping was a way of life.
He went to sea as a young man and learned the shipping business from the deck of a cargo vessel.
In 1970, he bought his first ship, a small cargo vessel called the Patricia. He started Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) in Geneva, Switzerland, focusing on cargo routes between the Mediterranean and East Africa.
Aponte grew MSC methodically. While competitors went public and answered to shareholders, MSC stayed private.
Aponte reinvested every profit into buying more ships. No dividends.
No IPO. Just more ships.
By the 2000s, MSC had grown into one of the top five container shipping lines in the world. The growth was organic and acquisition-based: buying ships when prices were low, expanding routes, and undercutting competitors on price.
During the pandemic supply chain crisis of 2021-2022, container shipping rates exploded from roughly $1,500 per container to over $20,000. MSC, with the world's largest fleet, was perfectly positioned.
Reported profits for 2022 were estimated at over $60 billion, making it potentially the most profitable year for any private company in history.
Aponte also built MSC Cruises into the world's second-largest cruise line (after Carnival). The cruise business started in the late 1980s and now operates a fleet of over 20 ships carrying millions of passengers annually.
MSC overtook Maersk as the world's largest container shipping company by capacity in 2022.
COMPANIES & ROLES
Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) is the core. The world's largest container shipping line by fleet capacity.
Over 800 vessels, calling at more than 500 ports in 155 countries. The company handles roughly 18% of global container shipping.
MSC Cruises is the world's second-largest cruise operator. Over 20 ships with plans to expand to 30+.
Known for family-friendly cruising at competitive prices.
Terminal Investment Limited (TiL) operates port terminals around the world, giving MSC control over both ships and ports.
The group also has interests in logistics, rail transport, and digital freight platforms.
INVESTING STYLE & PHILOSOPHY
Buy ships. Buy more ships.
Reinvest everything. Aponte's investing style is almost comically simple.
He buys vessels when prices are low, operates them efficiently, and uses the profits to buy more vessels.
He thinks in cycles. Shipping is the most cyclical business in the world.
Rates boom and bust on roughly 7-10 year cycles. Aponte buys ships during busts when prices are lowest and profits during booms when rates are highest.
THE PLAYBOOK
Risk Approach
Extremely high but with deep industry knowledge. Shipping is volatile.
A single downturn can bankrupt overleveraged operators. Aponte has survived multiple cycles by maintaining financial discipline and staying private.
The concentration risk is extreme. His entire $33 billion fortune is in one industry.
But he knows that industry better than anyone alive.
Money Habits
Aponte lives in Geneva, Switzerland, and is extremely private. He rarely gives interviews, never appears on magazine covers, and avoids public events.
For a man worth $33 billion, he is remarkably invisible.
The family lives comfortably but not ostentatiously by billionaire standards. There are no mega-yachts (ironic for a shipping magnate), no sports team purchases, and no vanity projects.
The company is a family affair. His wife Rafaela worked alongside him in building MSC.
His son Diego Aponte is president of MSC and his daughter Alexa Aponte-Vago runs MSC Cruises through her husband Pierfrancesco Vago.
BIGGEST WIN
The 2021-2022 shipping boom. MSC's estimated $60 billion profit in a single year is potentially the most any private company has ever earned.
Aponte had spent decades building the world's largest fleet. When the pandemic caused supply chain chaos and container rates skyrocketed, MSC was positioned to capture an outsized share of the windfall.
Overtaking Maersk as the world's largest shipping line in 2022 was the culmination of 50 years of work.
BIGGEST MISTAKE
MSC has faced criticism for environmental practices. Container shipping is one of the most polluting industries on Earth, responsible for roughly 3% of global CO2 emissions.
MSC has been slower than competitors like Maersk to commit to decarbonization targets.
The extreme secrecy of the company has also drawn criticism. As a private company, MSC discloses very little financial information.
During the pandemic windfall, questions arose about whether shipping companies were profiteering from supply chain disruption.
FINANCIAL PHILOSOPHY
Stay private. Going public means answering to shareholders who want dividends and smooth quarterly earnings.
Shipping is too cyclical for that. By staying private, Aponte can reinvest during good times and survive bad times without shareholder pressure.
Own the entire chain. Ships, ports, logistics, and cruises.
If you control the infrastructure, you control the margins.
Buy during busts. The best time to buy a ship is when shipping companies are going bankrupt and selling their fleets at scrap prices.
FAMILY & PERSONAL LIFE
MSC is a true family company. Gianluigi and his wife Rafaela built it together.
Their son Diego Aponte serves as group president. Their daughter Alexa is connected to the cruise division through her husband, Pierfrancesco Vago, who is executive chairman of MSC Cruises.
The family is based in Geneva and maintains a low profile. The Aponte family succession appears well-planned, with the second generation already running major divisions.
EDUCATION
Aponte had limited formal education. He went to sea as a young man and learned the shipping business through direct experience.
His education was the ocean itself.
