MATT COHLER

Benchmark partner and former early LinkedIn and Facebook employee who became one of Silicon Valley’s most successful VCs

Netfigo Verdict
on Matt Cohler

Matt Cohler was employee #7 at LinkedIn, then joined Facebook when it had 130 million users, then went to Benchmark and led investments in Instagram, Uber’s early rounds, and Domo. He’s the rare person who was on the inside of two generational companies before they went public and then switched to the other side of the table to fund the next generation. A triple threat in Silicon Valley — operator, investor, and the guy who saw the future of social media before the rest of the world even had smartphones.

CAREER & BACKGROUND

Cohler studied music and economics at Yale before moving to Silicon Valley. He joined LinkedIn as one of its first employees, working directly under Reid Hoffman.

After LinkedIn, he joined Facebook in 2005 as VP of Product when the company was still a college-only social network.

At Facebook, Cohler helped expand the platform beyond college campuses into the general public. He was part of the team that turned Facebook from a dorm project into a global platform.

He left in 2008 to join Benchmark Capital.

At Benchmark, he led the firm’s investment in Instagram before Facebook acquired it for $1 billion. He was also an early investor in Uber’s earliest financing rounds, invested in Domo, and backed numerous other startups.

His operational experience at LinkedIn and Facebook gave him credibility with founders that most pure-play VCs can’t match.

COMPANIES & ROLES

Benchmark Capital is his home. Key investments include Instagram (acquired by Facebook for $1B), Uber (early rounds), Domo (business intelligence), and others.

LinkedIn — employee #7, helped build the professional networking platform from startup to scale.

Facebook — VP of Product, helped expand the platform from college-only to global dominance.

INVESTING STYLE & PHILOSOPHY

Cohler invests based on product intuition honed from building two of the most important social platforms in history. He looks for products that create new behaviors — things people didn’t know they needed until they tried them.

His Instagram investment exemplified this. The app was simple, beautiful, and people couldn’t stop using it.

That was enough for Cohler. Revenue models and business plans were secondary to the behavioral evidence.

THE PLAYBOOK

Risk Approach

High. Early-stage venture capital is binary by nature.

Cohler’s comfort with risk comes from having seen what early-stage chaos looks like from the inside at LinkedIn and Facebook. He knows that messy companies can become world-changing ones.

Money Habits

Cohler lives in San Francisco and maintains a relatively low profile. He’s known more for his intellect and product sense than for flashy spending.

His background in music gives him a creative sensibility that’s unusual in venture capital.

BIGGEST WIN

Instagram. Benchmark invested in the photo-sharing app before Facebook acquired it for $1 billion in 2012.

The deal was the defining acquisition of the mobile era and generated an enormous return for Benchmark. Instagram is now worth an estimated $100+ billion as part of Meta.

BIGGEST MISTAKE

Some of Cohler’s later investments at Benchmark were less successful as the firm navigated an increasingly competitive VC landscape. Domo, while it went public, has had a volatile post-IPO performance.

The specific miss rate isn’t publicly documented, but venture capital’s power law means most investments don’t return capital — even for the best firms.

FINANCIAL PHILOSOPHY

Cohler believes that the best products create new human behaviors. If people change how they communicate, share, or work because of your product, the financial outcomes take care of themselves.

His time at LinkedIn and Facebook proved this thesis.

He also believes in the importance of founder-product fit — the best companies are built by founders who are obsessed with the problem they’re solving.

FAMILY & PERSONAL LIFE

Cohler is private about his personal life. He lives in San Francisco.

His public identity is centered on his work at Benchmark and his prior roles at LinkedIn and Facebook.

EDUCATION

Yale University, where he studied music and economics. The combination is unusual for a VC but reflects his dual interests in creativity and analytical thinking.

No MBA — his graduate education was working at two of the fastest-growing companies in history.

BOOKS & RESOURCES

The Innovator’s Dilemma by Clayton Christensen shapes how Cohler thinks about disruption.

QUOTES (5)

The best founders I’ve worked with don’t need to be told what to do. They need someone who’s been through it to tell them they’re not crazy.

At LinkedIn and Facebook, I saw what happens when a product hits network effects. As a VC, I’m looking for that same moment.

I studied music at Yale. Turns out, understanding harmony and composition is weirdly useful for understanding product design.
