NICK TOMAINO
Founding crypto VC 1confirmation and betting on NFTs and OpenSea years before anyone took them seriously.
Nick Tomaino joined Coinbase in 2013 when working in Bitcoin was a career risk, not a flex. He left to start 1confirmation in 2017 with $26 million from Peter Thiel and Mark Cuban. Then he did the truly weird thing. He bought digital art and NFTs, including an early seed check into OpenSea, when most investors thought it was a joke. OpenSea later hit a $13.3 billion valuation. His whole thesis fits in three words. Belief equals value.

CAREER & BACKGROUND
Tomaino studied economics at Bowdoin College, a small liberal arts school in Maine. Not exactly a crypto pipeline.
He found Bitcoin through online forums and got obsessed. In 2013 he joined Coinbase as one of its first business hires, back when the whole company was a handful of people betting on internet money.
He left in 2016, did a short stint in venture at Runa Capital, then struck out on his own. In 2017 he launched 1confirmation, one of the earliest funds built purely for crypto.
COMPANIES & ROLES
1confirmation is his fund, and its portfolio reads like a greatest-hits list of crypto culture. It put an early seed check into OpenSea, the NFT marketplace that later exploded.
It backed SuperRare, the digital art platform, where Tomaino sits on the board. It also holds Cosmos, Polkadot, Maker and more.
He collected NFTs personally too, including CryptoPunks and work by artists like Beeple and Pak. He is less interested in the plumbing of crypto and more in the culture people actually use.
INVESTING STYLE & PHILOSOPHY
Tomaino invests in belief. His core idea is that on the internet, value is whatever a group of people decides to believe in together.
So he backs things with real communities and culture behind them, not just clever technology. He runs a concentrated book of high-conviction bets and holds them for years.
He is also willing to look stupid early. Buying pixel art JPEGs in 2018 looked ridiculous.
Then it was worth billions. He treats the market itself as the ultimate scorekeeper.
THE PLAYBOOK
Risk Approach
He holds through pain. Crypto has had two brutal winters since 1confirmation launched, in 2018 and 2022, and Tomaino rode both without bailing.
His whole model depends on staying in illiquid, early bets long enough for the belief to show up in the price. He is comfortable with huge swings because he thinks short-term volatility is just noise.
His actual risk control is diversifying across a handful of networks rather than betting everything on Bitcoin alone.
Money Habits
Tomaino keeps his personal life quiet, so there is no Buffett-style trivia about his breakfast here. What is public is how he operates.
He reinvests his energy into the space by writing openly through his newsletter, The Control, where he picks fights and shares theses in plain view. He runs a small number of big bets rather than spraying money everywhere.
And he collects the art he invests in, which is a rare thing. He actually uses the stuff he backs.
BIGGEST WIN
OpenSea. In 2018, 1confirmation put an early seed check into a tiny NFT marketplace when NFTs were basically a punchline.
Tomaino believed people would pay real money for digital ownership. By January 2022, OpenSea was valued at $13.3 billion.
That is a seed-stage return most investors only dream about. He backed SuperRare and collected CryptoPunks around the same time, all on the same bet.
That regular people would care about owning things on the internet. They did.
BIGGEST MISTAKE
His biggest strength is also his weakness. Being skeptical of hype has saved him from plenty of garbage, but it has also cost him.
He was publicly cool on Solana, saying he had not seen anything really pushing the space forward there. Then Solana went on a massive run.
When your whole edge is spotting real belief early, missing one of the biggest waves of belief in the market stings. Skepticism protects you until the crowd turns out to be right.
FINANCIAL PHILOSOPHY
Belief equals value. That is the whole thing.
Tomaino says that if the collective group of people on the internet believes something has value, then it has value. He also worships the market as a truth machine.
He has called the market his favorite source of truth, because over a long enough time it sorts hype from substance. The flip side is skepticism.
When he sees loud noise and no real innovation, he takes it as a signal to be careful, not excited.
FAMILY & PERSONAL LIFE
Tomaino is private about his family and rarely mixes his personal life into his very public crypto commentary. What is known is his path.
A kid from a regular background who went to a small college in Maine, got hooked on Bitcoin through internet forums, and ended up running a fund backed by Peter Thiel. He is one of those people whose real family, in a sense, is the online communities he spends his life betting on.
EDUCATION
He earned a bachelor's degree in economics from Bowdoin College in Maine. It is a well-regarded liberal arts school, but not a place that pumps out crypto founders.
His real education came from Bitcoin forums and then from three years inside Coinbase during its scrappy early days. That combination, classic economics plus front-row seat to crypto's birth, is what shaped how he thinks.
BOOKS & RESOURCES
Tomaino has not written a book, but he writes constantly through his newsletter, The Control, which is the best way to actually hear how he thinks.

QUOTES (6)
It's not an easy experience. Part of that is what makes it fun, though.
If the collective group of people on the internet believes something has value, it has value.
The great thing about markets is that, in the long run, the market kind of dictates the truth.
When you see so much noise around something in the short term, and you don't see any true innovation there, it can be a good time to be a bit skeptical.
