RICARDO SALINAS PLIEGO
Founder of Grupo Salinas. Built TV Azteca and Banco Azteca to serve Mexico's unbanked population.
He built a media empire and a bank that serves the people traditional banks refuse to touch. Banco Azteca lends to street vendors and factory workers while TV Azteca broadcasts telenovelas to 40 million Mexicans. He is also a Bitcoin maximalist worth $12 billion who once tried to make Banco Azteca accept crypto. The most chaotic billionaire in Latin America and somehow it keeps working.

CAREER & BACKGROUND
Salinas Pliego inherited Grupo Elektra, a consumer electronics retailer, from his grandfather in 1987. Instead of just selling TVs, he realized the customers coming into his stores needed two things.
Entertainment and credit. So he built both.
He founded TV Azteca in 1993 by winning the privatization auction for Mexico's second-largest television network. He paid $645 million.
Within five years he turned it into a legitimate competitor to Televisa, the dominant media company in the Spanish-speaking world.
In 2002, he launched Banco Azteca inside existing Grupo Elektra stores. The idea was revolutionary.
Use the retail footprint to offer banking services to people who had never had a bank account. He put ATMs and tellers inside electronics stores in working-class neighborhoods.
Within two years, Banco Azteca had 3 million customers.
The bank now serves over 16 million customers across Mexico and Latin America. It makes money on microloans, remittances, and basic savings accounts.
The interest rates are high because the customers are high-risk. Critics call it predatory.
Salinas Pliego calls it access.
COMPANIES & ROLES
Grupo Salinas (founder/chairman), TV Azteca (founder), Banco Azteca (founder), Grupo Elektra (chairman), Totalplay (telecom)
INVESTING STYLE & PHILOSOPHY
Salinas Pliego builds vertically integrated ecosystems for the Mexican working class. Sell them a TV through Elektra.
Finance it through Banco Azteca. Entertain them through TV Azteca.
Connect them to the internet through Totalplay. Every business feeds the others.
He is also an aggressive cryptocurrency advocate. He publicly holds Bitcoin in Banco Azteca's treasury.
He pushed to make Grupo Elektra accept Bitcoin payments. He tweets about Austrian economics and sound money in between posts about his pet tigers.
He does not invest in other people's companies. He builds his own.
Every major business in Grupo Salinas was created internally, not acquired.
THE PLAYBOOK
Risk Approach
Very high. He takes concentrated bets in politically sensitive industries in Mexico.
Media, banking, and telecom all require government relationships. He has faced multiple SEC investigations and Mexican tax disputes.
He operates in the zone where business and politics overlap uncomfortably.
Money Habits
He lives like a man who enjoys being rich. He owns exotic animals including white tigers.
He posts about them on social media regularly. He has mansions in Mexico City and Acapulco.
He flies private. He is the most visible billionaire in Mexico.
He is also famously combative on Twitter. He argues with journalists, politicians, and random critics about economics, Bitcoin, and Mexican politics.
He is the Elon Musk of Mexico but with telenovelas instead of rockets.
BIGGEST WIN
Building Banco Azteca from zero to 16 million customers. Nobody believed you could profitably bank Mexico's unbanked population.
The traditional banks said the economics did not work. Salinas Pliego proved them wrong by using the existing Elektra store network as a distribution channel.
Zero incremental real estate cost. The bank now generates billions in annual revenue.
BIGGEST MISTAKE
In 2005, the SEC charged Salinas Pliego with fraud related to Unefon, a mobile phone company within Grupo Salinas. The SEC alleged he personally profited $109 million from undisclosed related-party transactions.
He fought the charges for years. The case dragged on and created a cloud over his international reputation.
He never admitted wrongdoing.
FINANCIAL PHILOSOPHY
Serve the customer nobody else wants to serve. The unbanked population of Mexico represents over 60 percent of the country.
Traditional banks require credit scores, formal employment, and documentation that most Mexicans cannot provide. Salinas Pliego built financial products for people who earn in cash and live paycheck to paycheck.
He also believes deeply in hard money. He is a vocal Bitcoin supporter because he sees it as protection against the kind of currency devaluation that destroyed Mexican savings in the 1994 peso crisis.
FAMILY & PERSONAL LIFE
Married to Ninfa Salinas. He has multiple children.
His son Benjamin Salinas Pliego runs TV Azteca. The family controls all major decisions within Grupo Salinas.
It is a dynasty operation.
EDUCATION
He studied economics at the Monterrey Institute of Technology (ITESM), one of Mexico's top universities. He also studied at Tulane University in New Orleans.
He credits his grandfather's retail instincts more than any classroom education.
BOOKS & RESOURCES
The book Salinas Pliego recommends most publicly. He has promoted it on Twitter multiple times. It aligns with his Austrian economics worldview and his conviction that fiat currencies inevitably lose value
Explains why developing countries struggle with property rights and financial inclusion. It is essentially the intellectual framework behind Banco Azteca. De Soto argues that informal economies need formal financial tools, which is exactly what Salinas Pliego built
Captures the entrepreneurial chaos that Salinas Pliego embodies. Building something massive from nothing while fighting regulators, competitors, and doubters every step of the way

QUOTES (5)
Bitcoin is the best form of money humanity has ever created. Fiat currencies are government IOUs that lose value every single year.
People call our interest rates high. I call them the price of access. Try getting a loan from a traditional bank with no credit score and no formal employment.
Build an ecosystem, not a company. Every Grupo Salinas business feeds the others. The TV drives customers to Elektra. Elektra drives customers to Banco Azteca.
The banks did not want to serve 60 percent of Mexico. So I built a bank inside my stores. Now 16 million people have bank accounts who never had one before.
I buy during crises because that is when real assets go on sale. The 1995 peso crash was the best investment opportunity of my lifetime.
