DAVID ZASLAV
Orchestrating the $43 billion merger of Discovery and WarnerMedia to form Warner Bros. Discovery — one of the boldest consolidation bets in media history.
David Zaslav spent 16 years quietly building Discovery Communications into a global content machine before pulling off a $43 billion merger with WarnerMedia in 2022. The bet created one of the biggest media companies on earth but saddled it with around $45 billion in debt. He made the controversial call to write off a completed Batgirl film for $90 million rather than release it — a move that defined his entire approach: maximize cash flow above all else. His $247 million pay package in 2021 made him one of the highest-paid executives in America while employees faced layoffs. He is a dealmaker who knows how to squeeze cash out of content, but the WBD debt burden is the exam he still has not fully passed.

CAREER & BACKGROUND
Zaslav graduated from Boston University School of Law but skipped the law firm track entirely — he went straight into television. He joined NBC in 1989 as a lawyer and worked his way up to EVP of cable distribution, helping build NBC's cable portfolio from the inside.
In 2006, he made the jump to Discovery Communications as CEO. Discovery was a solid niche cable operator with Animal Planet and the Discovery Channel.
Over the next 15 years, Zaslav turned it into a global content empire. His biggest move in that era was the $14.6 billion acquisition of Scripps Networks Interactive in 2018, which added HGTV, Food Network, and the Travel Channel.
Then in April 2022, the largest bet of his career closed: Discovery merged with WarnerMedia, freshly spun off from AT&T, to form Warner Bros. Discovery.
The resulting company holds HBO, CNN, Max, DC Studios, Cartoon Network, and one of the largest film and TV libraries in the world. The debt is around $45 billion.
Repaying it while competing in streaming defines his every decision today.
COMPANIES & ROLES
Warner Bros. Discovery — CEO since April 2022.
Discovery Communications — CEO from 2006 to 2022. NBC/NBCUniversal — EVP of Cable and Domestic TV Distribution from 1989 to 2006.
INVESTING STYLE & PHILOSOPHY
Zaslav is a strategic acquirer who builds scale through M&A. His playbook is to buy content libraries, merge distribution, cut costs aggressively, and maximize EBITDA.
He is less interested in artistic risk and more focused on cash generation. Every major acquisition he has made has been about owning the rights to content people already watch.
THE PLAYBOOK
Risk Approach
He takes on enormous corporate risk — the WBD deal was packed with debt — but manages operational risk tightly. He is not afraid to make deeply unpopular calls if they protect the balance sheet, including writing off completed films or canceling prestige projects mid-production.
Money Habits
Zaslav is known for outsized compensation packages. In 2021, he received approximately $247 million — making him one of the highest-paid executives in the country.
His pay structure is heavily weighted toward stock, so his personal wealth tracks closely with WBD's share price, which has been punishing since the merger closed.
BIGGEST WIN
Transforming Discovery Communications from a mid-tier cable channel company into a global content powerhouse, culminating in the 2022 merger with WarnerMedia. The resulting company holds one of the most valuable media and entertainment libraries ever assembled under a single roof.
BIGGEST MISTAKE
The post-merger integration at Warner Bros. Discovery has been messy.
The company wrote off $1.8 billion in completed content, rebranded its streaming service multiple times, fumbled CNN's digital pivot, and shed over 70% of its market cap from the post-merger high. The $45 billion debt load constrains every decision and has left shareholders frustrated.
FINANCIAL PHILOSOPHY
Cash flow is king. Prestige films, legacy brands, and critical darlings all come second to whether the company can service its debt and invest in the platforms that matter in 10 years.
Every creative decision is also a financial one.
FAMILY & PERSONAL LIFE
Married to Pam Zaslav. Has three children.

Content is king, but distribution is the kingdom.
We are not in the business of creating content for content's sake. We are in the business of creating content that people love and that sustains a business.
HBO is the gold standard. We are going to protect that brand and build around it.
The most important thing for us is to get to profitability in streaming. We are laser-focused on that.
Discovery has always punched above its weight. We do more with less than anyone in this industry.

Robert Iger
Iger and Zaslav are the two dominant dealmakers shaping Hollywood in the streaming era. Iger built Disney's content empire; Zaslav's Warner Bros. Discovery is its closest rival in the battle for subscribers and IP ownership.
Rupert Murdoch
Both built global media empires through aggressive M&A and supervoting share structures. Murdoch's Fox-Disney saga in 2018 ran parallel to Zaslav's own Discovery-WarnerMedia deal, and the two executives competed for similar assets.
